With the rise in popularity of e-books among students as well as casual readers,
schools and libraries need more choices to meet the unprecedented demand for
e-content. World Book has entered the arena with its new platform, aimed at
students in elementary through high school. The layout is clean and uncluttered,
and users will easily navigate the search screens to find what they need. The
opening page offers a search box as well as the ability to browse by series or by
subject. Advanced search allows limiting of results to different content types:
book title, series title, author, subject, copyright year, or interest level (K–12).
There is also a sidebar with 15 preselected subjects (including “Animals,” “Fiction
and Literature,” “High Interest,” and “Transportation”). These subjects can be
further explored using the drop-down menus that appear, offering the sets that
cover each subject. Currently, there are 23 series in the collection, including
Building Blocks of Mathematics, Building Blocks of Science, Learning Ladders,
Living Green, and Trek’s Travels. This amounts to nearly 200 individual titles. All
of the titles feature full-color illustrations, and most offer audio and video files for
selected content. Clicking on a book opens the online viewer, which offers
multiple ways to navigate—useful for younger students, who require simple,
highly visible navigational tools, as well as older students with more advanced
navigational skills. Advanced users can make use of highlights and notes and
search the online dictionary. Users can create a virtual bookshelf with an
individual log-in and IDs set up by the user, and titles can be accessed from a
variety of Internet-ready devices, including Nexus, iPad, and Galaxy tablets.
Libraries can offer 24/7 access to patrons, with unlimited simultaneous access.
The easy navigation and broad range of content at several different reading
levels make this platform an interesting possibility for school and public libraries
seeking to add e-books for kids to their collections.
